Danielle Brooks\u00a0(born September 17, 1989) is an American actress. Her breakthrough role was as prison inmate\u00a0Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson\u00a0in the\u00a0Netflix\u00a0comedy-drama series\u00a0Orange Is the New Black\u00a0(2013\u20132019).<\/p>\n
In 2015, Brooks made her\u00a0Broadway\u00a0debut in the musical revival of\u00a0The Color Purple\u00a0as Sofia, for which she received a nomination for a\u00a0Tony Award\u00a0and won a\u00a0Grammy Award. In 2023, Brooks reprised her role as Sofia in the\u00a0film adaptation of\u00a0The Color Purple\u00a0and was nominated for an\u00a0Academy Award,\u00a0British Academy Film Award, and\u00a0Golden Globe Award for her performance. In 2021, she played gospel singer\u00a0Mahalia Jackson\u00a0in the made-for-television biographical film\u00a0Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia, for which she was nominated for the\u00a0Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie\u00a0as an executive producer.<\/p>\n
In 2022, Brooks hosted Netflix’s reality series\u00a0Instant Dream Home\u00a0and was nominated for a\u00a0Daytime Emmy Award\u00a0for Outstanding Daytime Program Host. The same year, Brooks starred in the superhero series\u00a0Peacemaker\u00a0(2022\u2013present) and returned to Broadway in the revival of the\u00a0August Wilson\u00a0play\u00a0The Piano Lesson, for which she received a\u00a0Drama Desk Award\u00a0nomination. She has since starred in the fantasy adventure comedy\u00a0A Minecraft Movie.<\/p>\n
