Cynthia Chinasaokwu Onyedinmanasu Amarachukwu Owezuke Echimino Erivo(\/\u0259\u02c8ri\u02d0vo\u028a\/\u0259-REE-voh;\u00a0born 8 January 1987) is a British actress and singer. Known for her work on both stage and screen, she is the recipient of\u00a0several accolades\u00a0and one of the few individuals nominated for\u00a0an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award (EGOT), winning all but the Oscar.<\/p>\n
Erivo made her\u00a0West End\u00a0debut in the stage musical\u00a0The Umbrellas of Cherbourg\u00a0(2011). She later made her\u00a0Broadway\u00a0debut playing Celie in the musical revival of\u00a0The Color Purple\u00a0(2015\u20132017). Erivo’s work for the production won her the\u00a0Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical\u00a0and\u00a0Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, as well as a\u00a0Daytime Emmy Award. She expanded to films in 2018 with the crime thrillers\u00a0Widows\u00a0and\u00a0Bad Times at the El Royale. Erivo earned nominations for the\u00a0Academy Award for Best Actress\u00a0for portraying\u00a0Harriet Tubman\u00a0in\u00a0Harriet\u00a0(2019) and\u00a0Elphaba\u00a0in\u00a0Wicked\u00a0(2024), as well as a nomination for\u00a0Best Original Song\u00a0for the song “Stand Up” from the former.<\/p>\n
On television, Erivo portrayed\u00a0Holly Gibney\u00a0in the\u00a0HBO\u00a0crime drama miniseries\u00a0The Outsider\u00a0(2020) and\u00a0Aretha Franklin\u00a0in\u00a0National Geographic’s anthology series\u00a0Genius: Aretha\u00a0(2021); the latter earned her a nomination for the\u00a0Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
