John Arthur Lithgow (born October 19, 1945) is an American actor. He studied at\u00a0Harvard University\u00a0and the\u00a0London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art\u00a0before becoming known for his diverse work\u00a0on stage and screen. He has received\u00a0numerous accolades, including six\u00a0Primetime Emmy Awards, two\u00a0Golden Globe Awards, and two\u00a0Tony Awards, as well as nominations for two\u00a0Academy Awards, a\u00a0British Academy Film Award, four\u00a0Grammy Awards, four\u00a0Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a\u00a0Laurence Olivier Award.<\/p>\n
Lithgow won two\u00a0Tony Awards, his first for\u00a0Best Featured Actor in a Play\u00a0for his\u00a0Broadway\u00a0debut in\u00a0The Changing Room\u00a0(1972) and his second for\u00a0Best Actor in a Musical\u00a0for the musical\u00a0Sweet Smell of Success\u00a0(2002). He was Tony-nominated for\u00a0Requiem for a Heavyweight (1985),\u00a0M. Butterfly\u00a0(1988), and\u00a0Dirty Rotten Scoundrels\u00a0(2005). He has acted in the plays\u00a0The Columnist\u00a0(2012),\u00a0A Delicate Balance (2014), and\u00a0Hillary and Clinton\u00a0(2019). He portrayed\u00a0Roald Dahl\u00a0in the play\u00a0Giant\u00a0on the\u00a0West End,\u00a0for which he was nominated for the\u00a0Olivier Award for Best Actor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He starred as\u00a0Dick Solomon\u00a0in the television sitcom\u00a03rd Rock from the Sun\u00a0(1996\u20132001), winning three\u00a0Primetime Emmy Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. He received further\u00a0Primetime Emmy Awards\u00a0for his performances as\u00a0Arthur Mitchell\u00a0in the drama\u00a0Dexter\u00a0(2009) and as\u00a0Winston Churchill\u00a0in the\u00a0Netflix\u00a0drama\u00a0The Crown\u00a0(2016\u20132019). He also starred in\u00a0HBO’s\u00a0Perry Mason\u00a0(2020) and\u00a0FX’s\u00a0The Old Man (2022).<\/p>\n
