James Francis Cameron\u00a0(born August 16, 1954) is a Canadian filmmaker. He is a major figure in the post-New Hollywood\u00a0era and often uses novel technologies with a\u00a0classical filmmaking style. Cameron first gained recognition for writing and directing\u00a0The Terminator (1984), and found further success with\u00a0Aliens\u00a0(1986),\u00a0The Abyss\u00a0(1989),\u00a0Terminator 2: Judgment Day\u00a0(1991), and\u00a0True Lies\u00a0(1994), as well as\u00a0Avatar (2009) and\u00a0its sequels. He directed, wrote, co-produced, and co-edited\u00a0Titanic\u00a0(1997), winning\u00a0Academy Awards for\u00a0Best Picture,\u00a0Best Director, and\u00a0Best Film Editing. He is a recipient of\u00a0various other industry accolades, and three of his films have been selected for preservation in the\u00a0National Film Registry\u00a0by the\u00a0Library of Congress.<\/p>\n
Cameron co-founded the production companies\u00a0Lightstorm Entertainment,\u00a0Digital Domain, and Earthship Productions. In addition to filmmaking, he is a\u00a0National Geographic\u00a0explorer-in-residence. He has produced many documentaries on deep-ocean exploration, including\u00a0Ghosts of the Abyss\u00a0(2003) and\u00a0Aliens of the Deep (2005). Cameron has also contributed to\u00a0underwater filming\u00a0and\u00a0remote vehicle technologies and helped create the digital 3D\u00a0Fusion Camera System. In 2012, Cameron became the first person to solo descend the\u00a0Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the Earth’s ocean, in the\u00a0Deepsea Challenger\u00a0submersible.<\/p>\n
Cameron’s films\u00a0have grossed over $8\u00a0billion worldwide, making him the\u00a0second-highest-grossing film director. Three of Cameron’s films are among the top four\u00a0highest-grossing films of all time;\u00a0Avatar\u00a0(2009),\u00a0Avatar: The Way of Water\u00a0(2022) and\u00a0Titanic\u00a0(1997) are the highest, third-highest and fourth-highest-grossing films of all time, respectively. Cameron directed the first film to gross over $1\u00a0billion, the first two films to gross over $2\u00a0billion, and is the only director to have had three films grossing over $2 billion.\u00a0In 2010,\u00a0Time\u00a0named Cameron one of the\u00a0100 most influential people in the world. Cameron is also an environmentalist and runs several sustainability businesses.<\/p>\n
