Ciar\u00e1n Hinds\u00a0(\/\u02c8k\u026a\u0259r\u0259n\/\u00a0KEER-\u0259n;\u00a0born 9 February 1953) is an Irish actor from\u00a0Belfast,\u00a0Northern Ireland. Hinds is known for a range of screen and stage roles. He has starred in feature films including\u00a0The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover\u00a0(1989),\u00a0Persuasion\u00a0(1995),\u00a0Oscar and Lucinda\u00a0(1997),\u00a0Road to Perdition\u00a0(2002),\u00a0The Sum of All Fears\u00a0(2002),\u00a0Munich\u00a0(2005),\u00a0Amazing Grace\u00a0(2007),\u00a0There Will Be Blood\u00a0(2007),\u00a0Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day\u00a0(2008),\u00a0Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows \u2013 Part 2\u00a0(2011),\u00a0Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy\u00a0(2011),\u00a0Silence\u00a0(2016),\u00a0First Man\u00a0(2018) and\u00a0Belfast\u00a0(2021), the last of which earned him\u00a0Oscar\u00a0and\u00a0BAFTA\u00a0nominations for Best Supporting Actor.<\/p>\n
Known for his distinctively deep voice, Hinds is also known for his voice role as Grand Pabbie, the Troll King, in the animated films\u00a0Frozen\u00a0(2013) and \u00a0Frozen II\u00a0(2019). He played General Zakharow in\u00a0Red Sparrow\u00a0(2018). He also portrayed\u00a0Steppenwolf\u00a0in\u00a0Zack Snyder’s\u00a0Justice League\u00a0(2017) and its 2021\u00a0director’s cut.\u00a0<\/p>\n
His television roles include\u00a0Julius Caesar\u00a0in the series\u00a0Rome, DCI James Langton in\u00a0Above Suspicion,\u00a0Mance Rayder\u00a0in\u00a0Game of Thrones,\u00a0and Captain\u00a0Sir John Franklin\u00a0in\u00a0The Terror. In addition, Hinds appeared in season 3 of\u00a0Shetland (2016), produced by ITV.<\/p>\n
As a stage actor, Hinds has spent periods with the\u00a0Royal Shakespeare Company\u00a0and the\u00a0Royal National Theatre, and six seasons with\u00a0Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre. Hinds has continued to work on stage throughout his career. In 2020, he was ranked 31st on\u00a0The Irish Times list of Ireland’s greatest film actors.<\/p>\n
