Peyton Williams Manning\u00a0(born March 24, 1976) is an American former professional\u00a0football\u00a0quarterback\u00a0who played in the\u00a0National Football League\u00a0(NFL) for 18 seasons. Nicknamed “the Sheriff”,\u00a0he spent 14 seasons with the\u00a0Indianapolis Colts\u00a0and four with the\u00a0Denver Broncos.\u00a0Manning is considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.\u00a0A member of the\u00a0Manning football dynasty, he is the second son of former NFL quarterback\u00a0Archie Manning, older brother of former NFL quarterback\u00a0Eli Manning, and uncle of\u00a0Texas Longhorns\u00a0quarterback\u00a0Arch Manning. He played\u00a0college football\u00a0for the\u00a0Tennessee Volunteers, winning the\u00a0Maxwell,\u00a0Davey O’Brien, and\u00a0Johnny Unitas Golden Arm\u00a0awards as a senior en route to victory in the\u00a01997 SEC Championship Game.<\/p>\n
The Colts selected Manning\u00a0first overall\u00a0in the\u00a01998 NFL draft and served as their starting quarterback from 1998 to 2010. He helped transform the struggling Colts franchise into consistent playoff contenders, leading them to 11 playoff appearances, eight division titles, three\u00a0AFC Championship Games, two\u00a0Super Bowl appearances, and one championship title in\u00a0Super Bowl XLI, the franchise’s first in over three decades and first since relocating to Indianapolis. Manning was also named\u00a0Super Bowl MVP\u00a0in the victory. After undergoing neck surgery that sidelined him for the 2011 season, Manning was released by the Colts and signed with the Broncos. Serving as the Broncos starting quarterback from 2012 to 2015, he helped them clinch their division each season and reach two Super Bowls. Manning’s career ended with a victory in\u00a0Super Bowl 50, making him the first starting quarterback to win the Super Bowl for more than one franchise.<\/p>\n
Manning holds many NFL records, including most\u00a0MVP awards,[16]\u00a0quarterback first-team\u00a0All-Pro\u00a0selections, 4,000-yard passing seasons,\u00a0single-season passing yards,\u00a0and single-season passing touchdowns.\u00a0He is also third in\u00a0career passing yards and\u00a0career passing touchdowns.\u00a0Helping lead both the Colts and Broncos to two Super Bowls each, Manning is the only quarterback to have reached the Super Bowl with multiple franchises and multiple starts for each.\u00a0He was inducted into the\u00a0College Football Hall of Fame\u00a0in 2017 and the\u00a0Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.<\/p>\n
