Gerard James Butler (born 13 November 1969) is a Scottish actor and film producer. After studying law, he turned to acting in the mid-1990s with minor roles in productions such as\u00a0Mrs Brown\u00a0(1997), the\u00a0James Bond\u00a0film\u00a0Tomorrow Never Dies\u00a0(1997), and\u00a0Tale of the Mummy\u00a0(1998). In 2000, he starred as\u00a0Count Dracula\u00a0in the gothic horror film\u00a0Dracula 2000. He played\u00a0Attila the Hun\u00a0in the miniseries\u00a0Attila (2001), then appeared in the films\u00a0Reign of Fire\u00a0(2002) and\u00a0Lara Croft: Tomb Raider \u2013 The Cradle of Life\u00a0(2003) before starring in the science fiction film\u00a0Timeline\u00a0(2003). He played\u00a0Erik, The Phantom\u00a0in\u00a0Joel Schumacher’s 2004 musical\u00a0The Phantom of the Opera.<\/p>\n
Butler gained wider recognition for portraying\u00a0King Leonidas\u00a0in\u00a0Zack Snyder’s fantasy war film\u00a0300\u00a0(2007). In 2010, he began lending his voice to the\u00a0How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Also in the 2010s, he portrayed a Secret Service agent in the action thriller\u00a0Has Fallen\u00a0film series,\u00a0played military leader\u00a0Tullus Aufidius\u00a0in the 2011 film\u00a0Coriolanus, and\u00a0Sam Childers\u00a0in the 2011 action biopic\u00a0Machine Gun Preacher.
