Sir Ridley Leighton Scott (born 30 November 1937) is an English filmmaker. He directs films in the\u00a0science fiction,\u00a0crime, and\u00a0historical epic\u00a0genres with an atmospheric and highly concentrated visual style.\u00a0He ranks among the\u00a0highest-grossing directors, with his films grossing a cumulative $5 billion worldwide. He has received\u00a0many accolades, including the\u00a0BAFTA Fellowship\u00a0for Lifetime Achievement in 2018, two\u00a0Primetime Emmy Awards, and a\u00a0Golden Globe Award.\u00a0He was\u00a0knighted\u00a0by\u00a0Queen Elizabeth II\u00a0in 2003 and appointed a\u00a0Knight Grand Cross\u00a0by\u00a0King Charles III\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n

Scott has been nominated for three\u00a0Academy Awards: Directing\u00a0for\u00a0Thelma & Louise,\u00a0Gladiator, and\u00a0Black Hawk Down. Gladiator\u00a0won the\u00a0Academy Award for Best Picture and received a nomination in the same category for\u00a0The Martian. In 1995, Scott and his brother\u00a0Tony\u00a0received a\u00a0British Academy Film Award\u00a0for\u00a0Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.\u00a0Scott’s films\u00a0Alien,\u00a0Blade Runner\u00a0and\u00a0Thelma & Louise\u00a0were each selected for preservation in the United States\u00a0National Film Registry by the\u00a0Library of Congress\u00a0for being considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
