Welcome to the Ashmark Incursion, a complete, modular D&D 5e setting guide and tactical one-shot adventure engineered for a party of four to five 3rd-level adventurers. Designed by 🔮 Arkahna and field-tested across the arcane proving grounds of the Cinesist Codex, this module blends frontier wilderness exploration, investigative intrigue, and a deadly 5-room dungeon crawl against the looming shadows of the Ashmark Borderlands.

Frontier Geography and Settlement Hubs

The borderlands are an untamed frontier caught between jagged mountain crags and the ancient, mist-shrouded Weeping Woods. Civilization clings to life through two fortified anchor settlements:

Oakhollow (Timber Village)

A fog-shrouded settlement of hardy lumberfolk and trappers. Famous for harvesting enchanted ironwood and offering refuge at The Split Log Inn. The local river trade depot serves as the primary supply conduit for outbound mountain expeditions.

Cragwatch (Cliffside Bastion)

A stone fortress carved into sheer vertical cliffs overlooking the treacherous Ashmark Pass. Commanded by the stalwart veteran Captain Vaelen, this garrison stands as the final bastion defending the lowlands against mountain beasts.

Dramatis Personae: Key Regional Figures

  • Captain Vaelen (Veteran, Lawful Good): The battle-scarred commander of Cragwatch. Stern, unyielding, but deeply loyal to his troops and desperate to recover missing supply caravans before winter seals the pass.
  • Elara Moonwhisper (Mage Scholar, Neutral Good): A half-elven Arcane researcher investigating planar rift fluctuations and ancient Netherese ruins scattered across the valley. She provides spell scroll rewards and tactical lore.
  • Grok the Honest (Goblin Trader, Chaotic Neutral): An enterprising merchant protected by twin ogre mercenaries. Grok trades in exotic potions, salvage relics, and underground rumors at surprisingly reasonable coin rates.

The 5-Room Tactical Adventure: The Shadows of Cragwatch

Adventure Synopsis: Three critical supply wagons bound for Cragwatch have vanished into the misty pass. Captain Vaelen promises 500 gold pieces and a rare magic item to any mercenary company that recovers the cargo and purges the mountain lair.

Room 1: The Ambush at Bloodpine Ridge (Entrance Guardian)

Narrow mountain canyon choked with thick fog. Four Goblin Scouts positioned on 15-foot high stone ledges rain arrows on the wagon trail, while a stealthy Bugbear prowler attempts to flank from behind the party. A DC 14 Wisdom (Perception) check spots the tripwire net trap before stepping into the kill zone.

Room 2: The Sunken Shrine of Netheril (Puzzle & Roleplay)

Inside the cavern entrance sits an ancient stone shrine dedicated to a forgotten planar goddess. Three arcane runes must be activated in astronomical order (Dawn, Zenith, Eclipse) to lower a shimmering magical barrier. Alternatively, consulting the notes of Elara Moonwhisper or passing a DC 13 Intelligence (Arcana) check reveals the bypass sequence, granting each character a temporary Blessing of Wardship (+1 to all saving throws for 1 hour).

Room 3: The Fungus Chasm (Red Herring & Setback)

A subterranean rope bridge spans a 40-foot deep chasm filled with bioluminescent shrieker mushrooms. Crossing requires DC 12 Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks; failing disturbs the spores, creating an ear-piercing sonic shriek that alerts the boss chamber and imposes Disadvantage on stealth checks for the next 10 minutes.

Room 4: The Corrupted Den (Climax Boss Encounter)

The party enters a cavernous arena littered with shattered wagon timber. At the center stands an enraged, shadow-corrupted Owlbear controlled by a Bugbear Beastmaster. The boss harnesses a terrifying screech attack (DC 13 Con save or Frightened for 1 round). Smart spellcasters can turn the tide by blasting the stalactite ceiling with a well-placed Fireball to crush enemy reinforcements!

Room 5: The Spoils & Arcane Revelations (Resolution)

Behind the beast’s nest lies the intact Cragwatch supply cache. In addition to securing 500 gp and Captain Vaelen’s undying loyalty, the party recovers a locked Netherese iron chest containing a Cloak of Elvenkind, two Potions of Greater Healing, and an encrypted planar scroll hinting at the arrival of an inter-dimensional traveler…
